Interactive Tattoo Exhibit

Tattoos can play a powerful role in the healing process for trauma survivors, transforming pain into symbols of resilience, reclaiming ownership of personal narratives, and bridging emotional and physical scars through meaningful body art.

Despite their healing potential, tattoos are often misunderstood and stigmatized. To challenge these perceptions, I interviewed tattoo artists and created an interactive exhibit that explored the therapeutic power of tattoos while allowing visitors to experience temporary tattoos firsthand.

Interactive Tattoo Element

To create a more immersive experience, I developed skin printing, a close adaptation of screen printing inspired by the tattoo process.

Designed to mirror the trust, collaboration, and physical process of tattooing, skin printing helps visitors better understand the emotional experience behind receiving a tattoo. I chose this method because it emulates aspects of the tattoo experience:

  • Applied by another person, reflecting the trust between client and artist.

  • Creates an interactive experience beyond a temporary tattoo or stamp.

  • Uses ink to show what a tattoo might look and feel like on the skin.

  • Produces a unique print for every participant.
